We Are The Road Crew was the same on all instruments: pretty fun for about 30 seconds, then I realized there are only two riffs/drum patterns in the entire song, repeated endlessly, and I just wanted it to be over. Cool song to listen to, and I'll happily take more Motorhead in the game, but I think you can avoid this one.
The Metal is a bastard on guitar, with long strings of hopos. I don't know how guitars players who are actually good will handle it, but I felt like it was just tricky enough to trip me up. Not hard, just a little annoying. The drums gave me a head ache too, but I think that's just because the song has a fairly unique drum pattern, and it took me most of the song to get the beat down. I think most drummers will find it pretty fun if they can get a handle on it. Tenacious D is one of those bands who I'm always happy to see, so I'd happily recommend getting this. Though I can't see this one doing much for you if you're not a fan.
More Than Meets The Eye is a Testament song, and like other Testament songs, its fun on drums and makes me want to kick my tv when I play it on bass or guitar. The song is filled with triplets or gallups or whatever it is that guitar players call them, and a fairly crazy solo. Not really my thing on the whole, but I'm sure someone somewhere will enjoy it. Also I'm mad at Luxe for making the same Transformers joke that I was going to make.
I think you can mostly avoid the Brutal Legend pack, unless you're just hardcore about getting all the metal there is to get. Tenacious D was fun for me, the other two I could have done without. I like the idea of this pack in theory. Incorporating music from other video games into Rock Band is something I'd like to see more of. But I think in the future they need to be a little smarter about picking songs that chart well if they're going to keep doing packs like this.
The Blacktide song is pretty fun. Definitely easier than the other two songs we have by them (also the lyrics are far less corny than Warriors of Time). There's nothing really amazing or outstanding here on any chart. Just a bunch of fun charts for a pretty good song. Good enough to justify buying I think.
The Blink song is just like all the other Blink songs: really basic guitar and bass, mostly easy drums with a few fills that may break your combo if you're not fast enough/not paying attention. Nothing earth shaking here, but its worth buying if you're a fan, or if you just want a fun pop song in your dlc collection.
The Joe Satriani songs are wastes of my time. Yes, they really are. Obviously the guitars are crazy, and if that's your thing you'll enjoy these charts. But the bass and drums on Surfing With The Alien are just an excersise in the most soul crushing monotony. Even worse, the bass and drums on Satch Boogie are just half assed wank. I know focusing on the bass and drums for Joe Satriani dlc is kind of missing the point for playing Joe Satriani dlc in the first place, but I don't really care. I mostly play drums and a little bass, its how I tend to gauge a song initially. And while I do play a lot of guitar, I don't play it proficiently enough to enjoy this sort of thing. I just don't think these songs are very accessible for most casual players. I guess people like this kind of thing? I don't really get it. There's plenty of crazy guitar songs that sound better than this, and play better for the whole band too, and I'd recommend any of those before these songs.
If Joe Sat is half assed wank, Kansas is wank done right, with cool guitar solos, tricky hopo strings, and really fun beats. These were probably my favorite tracks of the week.
Finally there's Andres by L7. It sounds and plays exactly like the other L7 song. If you think that's a good thing you'll dig this song. If you don't then you should avoid this one. Simple as that
This week wasn't the gloriously awesome week I wanted it to be, but it was pretty good, with a little variety both in music style and in chart difficulty. As I said above, my favorites of the week were the Kansas songs, but in this case that's totally a subjective thing. I think all of these songs have something to offer, depending on your favorite instrument/personal tastes.
