I just posted this on rockband.com, and I'm hoping that maybe the Freddies can help me out -- this is a giant problem!
I play on a 60 GB PS3 with the 3.01 Firmware update. As of last night, when I go to play online with random people through the search feature, they can't hit "start" to get past the Matchmaking screen. That is, unless I remove my current band members and then add the randoms into the band.
On the other hand, my current band members can't hit start unless I remove them (my band members, not the randoms) from my band. This is the second time this has happened (the last time was in May), and we had to abandon our first band and start over -- I REALLY don't want to do that again.
I would classify myself as a hardcore Rock Band player. I buy all the DLC each week and my band plays for an hour or two most evenings.
We really don't want to have to start a third band, and, to be honest, I will probably walk away from the game at that point.
I'm not sure if anyone else has had this problem, but I would appreciate feedback from HMX as soon as possible in the hope that my file can be saved.
Feel free to PM me if anyone can help (or if you need additional info).
My hope is that there is a server glitch, but it doesn't seem to be happening in anyone else's bands.
Thanks for your prompt reply.

Oh no... since I have a cold and haven't played this week I didn't know this was happening. I can't believe you've had the same problem twice and at just about the same point in the game, too.

Luckily, I had been backing it up much more regularly, so I rebooted the HD. It saved everything (including trophies, plat icon, etc.) up until the last time I backed it up, which was 9/30. Also, our scores were already recorded on the leaderboards, so they are still up.
It turned out to be less of a deal than I thought it would -- a little bit of World Tour to get through (maybe 5 more sets, not bad), and then a lot of back-tracking on Challenges, but that's more something I'll have to deal with rather than you guys.
Needless to say, I'll be backing everything up AT LEAST once a week from now on!
Also, I'll need to re-add you and Maarten to the line-up the next time you guys are on.
See you (hopefully) Sunday!

Just to clarify some of your post - is there a way of backing up your Rock Band 2 saved data. Whenever I try to copy it to back it up it tells me its protected and I can't (although The Beatles game allows it). Therefore when my HD crashed earlier this year I lost everything. If there is a way to back up RB2 saved data could you explain how please?

Whew, that's good news Rob. Sort of. I think your game is possessed and starts getting corrupted every time you get close to finishing!
So when you back it up (I do have a backup of mine but it's been a while and I should make another backup), what happens when you can't restore your saved game data? I know there are some things you can't get back but not sure what things.

Jim: check out ask.com (just type in "how do I back up my ps3?). That's how I did it, and I got everything back -- I'm wondering if this was a 3.0 fix because I've heard nothing but "I lost this or that" from everybody I know that's back it up. Luxe: Everything seems intact, even trophies, plat icons, etc. It is like I put in the game the minute after I last backed it up. Thankfully, I did it two weeks ago so that it's not too much work to fix, but I'm going to back everything up as soon as I get each week's new DLC (time-consuming, yes, but not as bad as having to replay all this crap!). And don't worry, I'll try to keep your on-disc playing to a minimum I hope you're feeling better!

Glad to hear you got this somewhat resolved. I really wonder what the problem is. Bad sectors on drive? Firmware? Software bug related?
Have you heard of anyone else experiencing this issue?

I don't know enough about technology to even begin to fathom a guess as to what the problem is, and I haven't heard of anyone else experiencing the issue. It's happened twice -- once back in July, well before the 3.0 update, and then again this week. It definitely sucks having to go back through and replay a bunch of stuff, but at least I'm not backtracking months.
