U2 Starts to Think "Me Too" to Rock Band
October 6, 2009 | 2:51 PM PST
If The Beatles can get their own version of MTV and Harmonix' Rock Band, then why not you, too?
Oh, sorry. I mean, "why not U2?"
That seems to be the recurring mindset among Bono, Edge, Larry Adam, and Adam Clayton, who bowed out earlier this year from talks with the developers to have their likenesses and songs featured in a special-themed version of the musical video game. But it seems that The Beatles' blast from the past may be just what is needed in order to change their minds.
"We definitely would like to be in there, but we felt some of the compromises weren't what we wanted," bassist Adam Clayton told USA Today. "That could change. I love the idea that that's where people are getting music, and we'd love to be in that world. We'll figure something out. What The Beatles have done, where the animation is much more representative of them, is what we're interested in, rather than the one-size-fits-all animation. We didn't want to be caricatured."
Clayton sounds confident, and it seems that whatever negotiations had to be made in order to make The Beatles a reality could soon pave the way for Bono and crew to take the virtual stage themselves. I wouldn't count on this being the last we hear about such a prospect. source: via GoNintendo
that would be worse the beatles rockband for me ugh

Oh no... not another band exclusive game. As impressive as The Beatles:Rock Band was, I'd rather they just stick to releasing a 10-12 song "greatest hits" pack ala Iron Maiden. I like U2, but I'm not buying U2:RB.

It's ridiculous how some bands are so concerned about how their characters would look. Lighten up dudes, you're rock bands not heads of state.
Um no interest at all in a U2 music game.

Great as the Beatles game is I wonder if has set a toublesome precedent. We saw how the remaining members of Nirvana got upset with GH about using Kurt Cobain's likeness on other group's songs and now U2 are concerned about being characetured. With The Beatles RB being so protective of the music (no fills, no audience booing or singing along) and the image of the band (no custom avatars and a very rosey image of the dynamics within the group) will other bands now increasingly say they don't want to be in the generic music pool but only want their own exclusive release with the music unchanged and only avatars that look like them? Its already difficult to get a Beatles jam together due to the need to have a different disc in - if we end up with several then it will simply get increasingly hard to jam in a full band which will probably make more people stick to just the regular game. On the other hand if they made Rock Band: Genesis I'd be the happiest drummer on the planet. Probably too much reliance on keyboards for us ever to see them in the game though - although the guitar solo in Firth of Fifth would be legendary

In principle I see why everyone thinks this is a bad thing. But I can think of a gajillion U2 songs I'd want to play in a music game, and it'd be nice to have another band exclusive game from a band I actually care about (couldn't care less about Van Halen, Metallica, Aerosmith, or ACDC). So I guess when its a band I like I don't have a problem with this sort of thing lol.
As long as there are people willing to buy this stuff, I can't really fault the game developers or the bands for wanting to make band exclusive games. Quality of music aside, in terms of record sales and money made from touring and merchandise, U2 are up there with the Metallica's and Van Halen's of the world. If a game developer has the opportunity to license a few dozen of their songs they'd be stupid to pass on it.

IMO, I just don't think an exclusive game is necessary. For one, the development time and costs are ridiculously high to warrant another exclusive for just one band. There just aren't enough songs to make it worthwhile for the player and you will blow through the story-mode in a matter of a few hours, making the replay value low. It really doesn't add anything to the actual gameplay, unless you *really* care about their background story and need to have life-like animations/avatars. I can see it making a difference for the hardcore fans, but most hardcore fans already know the backstory and don't learn much new information to make it worthwhile. I'd rather just leave that to the documentarians.
Instead, stick with what matters most -- playing the instruments and singing -- and release a bad-ass setlist as a pack. Start off with 10-12 classic U2 songs, then release another big pack down the road. It will probably bring in much more money for HMX in the long run and leave them with more time to fix or improve issues with RB2 (crosses fingers).
If U2 refuses to release their songs without getting the Beatles:RB treatment, then they can all just suck my ****.
