David Bowie as a LEGO character in the upcoming video game LEGO Rock Band.
CAPTIONBy Warner Bros. InteractiveIggy Pop and David Bowie are together again, this time in the upcoming video game LEGO Rock Band (out later this year for Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and Microsoft Xbox 360).
Bowie joins Iggy Pop in providing his likeness to be converted into a LEGO minifigure for the full-band game, which uses the same instrument-based controllers as other Rock Band games. Players can sing, strum or drum along to Bowie's 1983 song Let's Dance. (The video is a clip from the song.)
The animations of Bowie, his band and the venue for the LEGO version of Let's Dance are loosely based on the original music video. More musicians involved in the game will be announced later, but Bowie and Pop bring rock credibility to the family-friendly game, says John Drake of Harmonix, which is developing the game with Traveller's Tales. "Those two are pretty unreal. They are both artists who have a great sense of humor," he says. "Iggy Pop does the GTA soundtrack DJ (on Liberty Rock Radio 97.7 in Grand Theft Auto IV) and David Bowie was on (Ricky Gervais' HBO series) Extras. But they are also very serious artists who are really important."
The rock musician Iggy Pop as a LEGO character in the upcoming video game LEGO Rock Band.
CAPTIONBy Warner Bros. InteractiveMusic trivia: Bowie produced several of Pop's albums including Raw Power, The Idiot and Lust for Life. They co-wrote China Girl, which became a hit for Bowie.
Iggy Pop, whose LEGO likeness even has highlighted ab accents that reflect his lean six-packed physique, recently took time to answer some questions via e-mail:
This seems like a strange combination, Iggy Pop and LEGO Rock Band. How did it come about?
Pop: They asked. There's not much I won't do if you asked nicely.
Have you been part of a video game before? Do you play any video games yourself?
Pop: No, but I've always wanted to be a toy and enjoy the freedom that comes with that. So it's a dream come true.
So how would you describe what you look like as a LEGO rocker?
Pop: Like a terror. Kind of like the Energizer Bunny pissed off.
What are your thoughts about the current music video game trend? Many say its a lazy way to try to produce music. Others say it engages listeners in music and may light a spark in some to create music on their own. Do you come down on one side of that argument?
Pop: When I was a kid, the first records that spoke to me were novelty songs, like Charlie Brown by the Coasters or The Witch Doctor and Flying Saucer records in the 50s. Later, as my tastes developed, of course, I changed, but these silly songs got me started. So I say I come down on the 'let the kids have some fun and get into it' side of the argument.
What songs of yours will be in the game? (How did you choose them?)
Pop: The Passenger, and I didn't choose it they did and it's a good choice.
