Yet another fantastic week for DLC. Every track had a little something to offer, but nothing was an all around stand out, and many major flaws on one chart or another. My trouble came with ignoring my natural bias towards particular bands or songs and honestly choosing what i felt to be best, in spite of it's flaws. This Week....
Foo Fighters - I'll Stick Around
Some say we have too much Foo, I say never enough! Their music translates so well into the game that it's always a pleasure to play. The other 2 Foo tracks might not have held up against some of the other releases this week, but this one definitely deserves your attention. Here is why....
Guitar - This plays exactly like you think it should by listening to it. Alt-strummy? Kinda, but not necessary. You could totally Fc this one on the downstrum, even on the quicker triplets. Personally I choose to Alt-strum the triplets and downstrum everything else. This is a real good excersize for switching between the two styles, a method that is almost required in other more difficult songs. It's rated tier 3, which seems a little high. An expert guitarist will goldstar it on their 1st or 2nd try. It took me 2. But make no mistake, this is about as much fun as you can have on a strummy song!
Bass - I really like the Foo Fighters style when it comes to bass lines, and this is no exception. It changes up enough to keep you on your toes. The triplet followed by the HO/PO may trip up the fingers at first. You can definitely rock to this. As a bass player, i would definitely choose this on occasion.
Drums - A shining moment here. Honestly i failed on the intro on my first run, but i knew i could do it. Made it to the verse on my 2nd run and by the time that fast part came around again I was handling it much better. I rarely do this well on tier 4 drum charts and I feel like i learned something here and had a lot of fun doing it! A great sense of satisfaction playing this one.
Vox - A great chance to flex the pipes! Croon through the beginning, scream a little, croon a little more, scream a little more. Take a deep breath, and really belt out the last part. It's really fun that way. I know this song like the back of my hand, so i was able to sing it as it was originally intended and FC it on a sightread. Others might not be so lucky. Dave Grohl is hitting a few different octaves throughout this one.
Party - A classic from The Foo Fighters first album, so most should find it familiar. If they don't, give them a reason to remember it. By the time the singer starts screaming "I'll stick around, I'll stick around", he should be standing on some furniture. The bass and guitarist should be hopping in unison and the drummer should be playing with the intent to break everything he hits. I always thought this song had a great build up to that point and even more so now that I can play it!
Cheers - to Inside out for having an unexpectedly fun drum track, that alone saves this song from being one to avoid.
Jeers - to No Rain for having an entirely forgettable drum track, that alone kept it from being my pick this week
Hope you enjoy this weeks edition of the $2 catch of the week. Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty? I was hoping for other songs, but still that's pretty awesome. Remember mileage may vary per user, all opinions welcome. Please discuss.
