Another great week for dlc, with some really awesome songs, and a few that played surprisingly better than I was expecting. So let's jump right in.
The Kaiser Chiefs are one of those bands who I don't really care about one way or the other. I feel the same way about their charts on this particular song as I do about their music: they don't really do enough to distinguish themselves from other bands, and that leaves me kind of bored with them. The drums and guitar charts are both alright, but neither chart really has anything exciting or interesting about it to set it apart from other, similar songs. The bass was pretty fun, simply because it had a few different patterns thrown in, and variety is always good. This song was good, and I enjoyed playing it, but nothing about it really grabbed me. I'd say if you're not a fan of the band, you can safely pass on this one.
No Rain was pretty fantastic on guitar and bass. This is definitely one of those songs where the bass player is playing a simplified version of what the guitar player is playing. That usually annoys me to no end, but these charts are so fun that I don't mind at all. Lots of hopos, lots of different stuff to do, kind of noodly. Good stuff. As anyone who's listened to this song could tell you, the drum chart leaves ALOT to be desired. Really there's very little to do here, and during the two parts of the song where you're not just hitting the yellow pad over and over again, you're still not doing anything exciting. I wouldn't want to play this too often on drums, but its a cool song, guitar and bass are awesome on it, and it seems like it'd probably be fun to play in a group, so I'd still recommend it.
I was really happy to get some Blur that A) showed what a fun guitar player Graham Coxon is and B) wasn't Song 2, which Rock Band will inevitably get regardless This song is lots of fun on all instruments. The bass is great, the guitar is tricky, but still enjoyable, and the drums are a blast, with a nice dancy beat.
If you believe Tack, I'm Shipping Up To Boston is the greatest singular achievement in music history. I don't think I love it as much as he does, but I do think its pretty good. The bass is alright, lots of strumming and repetition, but good enough. The guitar is also pretty repetitive, but that's ok since its extremely fun. Basically you go back and forth between power chords and that fiddle or whatever the hell it is. Its more interesting to play than it sounds lol. The drums are nothing but a gigantic C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER for me. Its nothing difficult, just lots and lots of quick little chunks of cymbal hits thrown in haphazardly. One of those songs where you can hit 96% of the notes and still only have four stars. Still, as long as you're not worrying about stars and scores its a fun chart to play. Im not a huge Dropkick Murphy's fan, to me most of their stuff just sound like Irish drinking tunes and sea shanties mixed with electric guitars and dudes yelling, but this song is pretty awesome, and reminds me of The Departed, which was a good movie. So you know, this one wins all the way around.
Eve 6 is stupid. I hate them, and their singer sounds like he needs to blow his nose. But the drum chart was surprisingly fun. I wouldn't mind playing this with my band regularly, as long as I was the drummer.
Finally there's the Foo Fighters tracks. I'm not a huge fan of this band (basically the further you get away from their first cd, the less interest I have in their music), but these tracks played surprisingly well. Bass and guitar are exactly what you'd expect on a Foo Fighters chart, though that isn't necessarily a bad thing. In fact I'd go so far as to say that I'll Stick Around and All My Life are flat out KICK ASS. That ch-ch-chunka riff on All My Life especially, makes the song worthwhile. The drums are years better than what I was expecting. Lots of rolls, off beat and triple kicks, crashing cymbals, all the things that make songs noisy and fun. I'm not that crazy about Lonely As You, but if you're going to get the other two Foo songs, you may as well pick this one up too. As goofy as it is for us to have 20 something songs by the same band, I still want them to release Big Me. We have more than enough Foo as it is, but I'd still enjoy that particular song lol.
Picking a best for this week is tough, there's a lot of good stuff here. No Rain is the obvious choice, its a classic track everybody knows, and fun on two instruments. All My Life and I'll Stick Around were both lots of fun on every instrument, and definitely rocked. That Blur song is also fun all the way around, and sounds and plays differently than a lot of what's in Rock Band already. My personal favorite was Blur, but I think all the songs I just mentioned are awesome, and absolutely worth checking out.
