After last weeks offerings spanning the rainbow of dull/uninteresting to unlistenable/unplayable, how could i be disappointed? Well, I still am. This week was better, but nothing really stand out. It's all really average with nothing that screams "must have". That being said, I still got one that caught my attention at least a little.
This Week -
The Dead Weather - Treat Me Like Your Mother
Never heard of this band, but read that they were described as the latest "alternative super-group". Hardly. The other 2 tracks were throwaways in my book, but this one jumped out past the forgettable Big Dipper, and unnecessary JP live tracks. At the very least it has an original and interesting sound that we need a little more of. Here is why...
Guitar - It's got an enjoyable riff that's not difficult to play. You really can't say much more about it than that. It doesn't change much throughout the song except for a period of misplaced noise that doesn't seem to flow well with the rest of the song.
Bass - The biggest downfall of the song is that this is nearly identical to the guitar chart. seriously about 98% of the chart is copy/paste. You'd think the latest "alternative super-group" could write more variation in their instruments parts.
Drums - One of the better aspects of the song. Challenging but playable to me. Others might find it easy, but i think we might all agree it's a really fun beat throughout and definitely the best drum chart this week.
Vocals - Standard fare through the female verse, but it get's really fun with the male vocals toward the end. "You blink when you breathe and you breathe when you lie. You blink when you lie." What a great lyric! This is one instance that i wish those parts were talkied, and they sound like they should have been. It would have allowed for some personal flair and added to the fun factor of this track.
Party - could be a surprise hit, with a catchy hook and a fun dance rock beat. Plus lyrics that people will want to chant along with. You might turn a lot of people on to this band, but make sure you warn them that the other offerings might not be as entertaining.
Hope you enjoy this weeks edition of the $2 catch of the week. i might need a few more days to finalize my pick for the most recent DLC, but rest assured it is coming soon! Remember mileage may vary per user, all opinions welcome. Please discuss.
