Remember the Social D pack? Remember what everybody said? Really bland, vanilla charting on every instrument, but you could sort of look past it because the songs were at least catchy. Green Day is just like that, only minus the catchy part. Tack got pretty excited about a bass solo on one of these songs, but I don't really see the point. If the bass player is still doing the same crappy, boring bass line they've been playing throughout the rest of the song then it really doesn't matter if they get a few bars all to themselves to keep playing that same crappy, boring bass line, does it? Like I said, there's very little to do on these charts, and I don't think the songs themselves are good enough to make up for that, but people who care more about Green Day than I do may feel differently.
So, onto the the Mayhem pack. And really, this is a pretty review proof batch of songs. The people who are going to get this are either fans of this type of music, fans of punishing note charts, dlc whores, or some mix of the three. I'm not sure I can say anything about this stuff that would influence any of those opinions one way or another. For the most part, these songs are hard. Drums are really hard. Guitar and bass aren't as bad as the drums, but they're still rough. Vocals are a dull walk in the park thanks to ridiculous amounts of talkies.
Tack did a pretty good job of summing up what does and doesn't work with these guitar and bass charts (though I disagree with him on Empire of the Gun, which I think had my favorite guitar chart of the week), and Wade has a thread going right now that talks about the drum charts (short version: lots of kicking and blast beats).
I heard quite a few people complain about the lyrics, and their stupidity, which sort of intrigued me, so for once I payed attention to the words of the songs. And they seem pretty typical of this kind of music to me. There's a song about how much God totally sucks and stuff, and there's a song about the mark of the beast which Tackhead claims sounds like a hip hop jam, and there's a song about how being evil is totally awesome because you get to rise from the dead and take over the world or something, and there's a song about how you need to stay away from wizards and their boss, the devil, and there's a song about soldiers, and there's a song about hitting dudes in the face with hammers, and there's a song about vampires that live in a tower that you should never ever go near, or something. Oh and the Marilyn Manson song. Where I guess he thinks rebellious teenagers are awesome and awful AT THE SAME TIME
Yeah, that is all pretty stupid, but there's still a part of me that thinks singing about vampires and evil zombies is way more awesome than singing lame whiny songs about your ex girlfriend will ever be.
So anyway, lyrical tangents aside, this week didn't do much for me. I have no idea what to suggest to someone determined only to get one song. The Green Day songs all play pretty similarly, so you could go with whichever one of those tracks sounds best to you. Or if you enjoy Mayhemish type music, you could get Disposable Teens (easy but fun, especially with a group), or Empire of the Gun, which I enjoyed on guitar and drums (I didn't enjoy anything on bass this week ), or if you're determined to punish yourself, go with the Black Dahlia Something Something Whatever Murder Fan Club Long Name Band, because they seemed to have the toughest song this week.
