Last week it was tough to call because of an abundance of really good songs. This week is swimming in mediocrity. Nothing is terrible, but as Funk said nothing really jumps out as outstanding. If you read his review, you should know that I agree with nearly everything he said, with the exception of B.M.R.C. If that is one of their better songs.... let me stop before i get into an internet bitchslapping contest.
This Week -
The Devil Wears Prada - Hey John, What's Your Name Again?
Again all the warped tour stuff was new to me, but I generally was not as impressed this week as i was last week. It feels like they sent the Warped Tour B-Team at us just to avoid having only 3 dull Foreigner tracks to release on a short holiday week. This track stood out from the rest, if only slightly. Here is why...
Guitar - I quite enjoyed the guitar chart in this one. There is a really tricky "fast alt-strum mixed with HO/PO" section that will give you some trouble, but i don't think it is long enough to become too frustrating or fail anyone out. The alt-strum chords make some interesting and challenging transitions from one to another, so it's not a snoozer as some alt-strum charts can be. Again, no guitar solo, which seems typical of this style of music.
Bass - Enjoyable and and not difficult. Some fast strumming toward the end might trip up a few. You will be the backbone should your drummer or guitarist struggle with this one.
Drums - Classify this one as "wish i could play it on expert! " Had to back it down to hard and found it to be a lot of fun, so I can see it's merits for a true expert drummer.
Vocals - Now I love to get my death metal growl on! But this song, and maybe the band in general, seems to scream and growl just for the sake of screaming and growling. It feels quite out of place most of the time. I'd be interested to see if their other offerings used this same style, or if it's just used to add to the rediculousness of this song. I did however enjoy the actual charted singing going on, but found it tough to make a decent transition from one to the other without breaking combo. By far the weakest of the four charts.
Party - Will probably be avoided, unless someone at your party actually knows this band. This is the weakest aspect of the song as a whole. It comes off as very disjointed, feeling like three or four songs were combined into one and switching indescriminately between them. At first playthrough i thought it was terrible, as I imagine most others will. Sadly it's the disjointedness that makes it kind of interesting to play, but casual listeners may never want to hear it again. It has grown on me enough to recommend it as the best of the bunch, but i doubt it will get a lot of requests.
It may sound like i didn't have a lot of good things to say about my selection this week, but unfortunately that is the hand that was dealt us with this weeks tracks. Nothing terrible, but nothing missed if you drank too much all weekend and forgot to buy anything. My true advice would be to go back into the archives and find a hidden gem of a song you haven't picked up yet. But if you need to get something this week, this is the one. Or Blue Monday, for being laughably easy, and instantly recognizable. ;D
Hope you enjoy this weeks edition of the $2 catch of the week. New Green Day and MAYHEM metal pack! I love anything that makes Tackhead cry. Remember mileage may vary per user, all opinions welcome. Please discuss.
