This is pretty late because I didn't even sort of feel like playing something non Beatles until a couple days ago lol. Anyway....
Freezepop makes some of my favorite songs in the game to listen to. They also make for very fun drum charts, as these songs prove. They're all pretty varied, with lots to do. Science Genius Girl is a devil tiered drum track that looks pretty complicated, but if you can get the main pattern down, the song becomes insanely fun. I also liked Less Talk More Rokk a lot too, though that had more to do with the intro reminding me of Daft Punk than because of any of the actual game play lol. The guitar and bass were not so great for me. Freezepop uses keyboards and synths and keytars and god knows what else, and I think that inflates the difficulty of these songs a bit. Its the old thing where "This isn't too bad to play on an actual instrument, but it doesn't mix well with a plastic five buttoned guitar controller," combined with the fact that the actual instrument in question isn't even a guitar. I have no problem with playing other instruments, I'm just saying in this instance it makes the guitar and bass difficulty a little wonky lol. Now I just wish HMX would man up and give us some more electropop/electroclash/synthpop type stuff. One band is really not enough to represent a genre as fun as this one.
Re:Your Brains is awesome. It isn't hard in any way shape or form, but it is fun, and its easy enough you can sing along with the very funny vocals on any instrument, and that's a plus for a song like this.
I was really happy to learn we were getting another MC Frontalot song. I wish it had been a different one though. I enjoy a good science vs. religion debate as much as the next guy, but as this song proves, it really doesn't make for compelling hip hop, does it? Anyway, this song is a turd. Very little to do on guitar or bass, and none of it is interesting. The drums are a little better, but not much. Livin At The Corner Of Dude And Catastrophe had a truly epic drum chart. I expected a lot more here.
I have to echo what others have said about Opening Band. Funny song, but severely lacking on the game play. The drum chart had a couple of fun fills but I can't think of anything else nice to say about this song. Last year's Pax pack had three really awesome songs in it. This year's, not so much. The zombie song is fantastic, the other two you can do without. Maybe next year's will be better?
Kryptonite has a ridiculously dull bass chart. The guitar chart is a little better. The real reason to buy this song is the drum chart though. Really fun with a few different patterns scattered about, and some awesome rolls. I hate this song. I didn't like it very much when it came out, and then it got so overplayed that I can't even stand to think about it ten years later. But this drum chart is so great that I will gladly play it over and over again, despite my feelings about the song itself lol.
I thought Miss Murder was awesome. The bass charts do feel counter intuitive, but I wouldn't go so far as to say the song was mischarted. On closer listen to the song I think the bass is really just played that way. To my mind it made the bass a little more enjoyable. I had a good time with the guitar chart too. The drums were a blast. This is a pretty easy song all the way around, but there's enough here for every instrument to do that I think people will have a good time with it.
Gasoline was just alright. The bass chart was sort of noodly (or at least noodly by the standards of music like this), but it was a little too repetitve for its own good. I didn't care for the guitar chart at all until I got to the solo, which was pretty great. I enjoyed the long sequence of hopo triplets afterwards too. They're slow enough that guitar players who aren't named HeavyMetalHead or JodyPounds will be able to play them, but fast enough that you'll still feel like a bad ass ;D The drums were decent. Not that remarkable really, but not awful either. I'd probably say as much about the song as a whole.
Finally there's ABC. Loved it on guitar and drums, the sweeps on the bass chart annoyed me a little. None of that really matters though. Its a classic song that's enjoyable to play, and easy enough that you can bop around while you're playing it. More than enough reason to buy it.
My favorite song for the week was probably Miss Murder. Good stuff all around. That said, I also don't think you could go wrong with Re:Your Brains or ABC. There's plenty to enjoy about both of those as well.
