Hello drummers
I've recently started to have an issue whereby my Ions will randomly disconnect in the middle of a song - the message "Please reconnect your drunkit" or something like that appears and I have to get up unplug and replug the kit. This happens seemingly at random and is obvioulsy a fairly major problem when in a full band. Has anyone else had this issue and does anyone know if anything can be done?

Paul, I don't know the cause of the problem but Maarten has the same issue with his ion kit. We were playing the other night and the kit was disconnecting at least once a song if not even more. I think he is going to have to send the brain or the whole kit back and exchange it.

The only thing I've ready online in the past is that the disconnect issues could be caused by either (1) Static Electricity buildup or (2) Cheap unshielded cables used on 3rd party cymbals or kick pedal. Not sure of the best way to reduce (1).

never had that happened to mine sounds like the brain may be going bad, since that would be the only part that plugs in the ps3 also when its not in use unplug it even playing other games the brain still will be on that could also cause wear on itself.

It looks like this is all to do with static electricity, there was a slight static discharge when I touched the pads after playing last night. Usually its pretty wet and therefore humid in the UK but In the last month I’ve had the heating on in the house leading to less humidity leading to more static electricity build up. Whilst I have a wooden floor I play the Ions on a rug to stop the bass pedal sliding about.
So the following tips have been offered:
1) Put a cotton sheet between the hit and the rug (as it’s a synthetic material) 2) Ground the bass pedal with a wire from it to something metal 3) Put cork “coasters” under the ions feet 4) Get an anti-static brush to use on the kit 5) Run hands over the kit after each song to discharge static manually 6) Spray dilutes fabric softner onto the rug before playing to reduce static
I’ll see if any of these work

I’m told that cold air carries less moisture than warm and therefore when it gets cold (as it suddenly has over here) the air you are warming in your house is dryer and warm dry air is obviously less humid than normal and this adds to the potential for static build up in electrical items. Apparently it is static build up under the pads that randomly disconnects the Ions mid song.
So last night I tried the following – I sprayed the rug that I use to put the kit on (so the bass pedal doesn’t slip on the laminate floor) with a mix of water and fabric softener. I put extra under the bass pedal (obviously this is less of an option if you play with the kit on a fixed carpet). I then put four cork mats under the drum feet to reduce friction.
Then after each song I ran my hands over the drum pads to discharge any built up static – there was occasionally a discharge. I then regularly sprayed the rug (every few songs) to keep the moisture levels up – I also sprayed the bottom of the legs on the kit ensuring I kept the spray away from leads and actually getting on the bass pedal.
This seemed to have a positive impact – no disconnects last night, although I onl;y played for an hour or so so that’s hardly definitive but I’ll keep trying this until it warms up again.

Of course...a day after I tell you that I wasn't having disconnect issues, I have a couple of them yesterday. Good call on all the static...I nearly took my hand off with a discharge after playing about 10 songs. Living in Utah I've got some seriously dry air I'm dealing with. I'll give some of your suggestions a shot.

had this problem straight out the box, although im no big time drummer i was getting disconected at least 2 x a song. After reading several peoples ways to fix them this is wut i did and my probs have gone!! First opened up each drum head and put in 2 dryer fabric sheets. I then grounded kit to wall socket. Then lastly i mounted brain on to my computer desk instead of kit frame. Like i said i havent gotten 1 dis-connect since doing these

And how did you ground it - do you just wrap some wire round the frame and attache it to something metal?

yeah thats right Paul, i unscrewed heads so you can lift the rubber part off completly then i carefully lifted tne foam part of drum to expose the circuit part of the drum head and wrapped the dryer sheet around that and also placed another dryer sheet before re-attaching the main rubber part. Now not sure with grounding in the U.K so your best bet if you think this could be your prob is to read rb forum!!!! Wut they suggested was to run a ground cable straight from wall socket to the frame. If this cant be done then ground wire must be grounded to something electrical that uses a 3 prong plug. If possible ground it to back of pc or similar device. Paul i would do the dryer sheets first, and belive it or not vibration played a big role in my disconnecting. Where my brain was mounted just like in manual after maybe 5-8 songs i would disconnect. After taking brain off the frame i disconnected about half of wut i was. So maybe go with moving the brain first then if that doesent help then try dryer sheets, then the grounding. If you need any help or futher advice hit me up you know im on most of the time

wow this is weird Ive never heard of this before and never had this problem, maybe its because I am an electrician and that shit knows who's boss in the house.
and here is my professional opinion the ps3 is run on 120 volts and for your controllers and guitars to work there are step down transformers in side the system for the usb to run on 12 volts, in this case you would only have a hot and a ground/neutral and the ground would continuous run back through the transformer down the cord attached to the ps3 and into the wall outlet and back to earth so it has a path to get out, now it sounds like there is no path out of there and this is why you have build up of electricity, I think erock is an electrician to so maybe he can add something else Ive missed

Who knew we had so many electricians in Camp Freddy!!!
Anyone want to run power from my house breaker-box to my shed? I need some lights and an outlet in there! LOL

I had this same problem at one point, and my fix was to just go buy one of those pads you put under a rug to keep it sliding all over the floor. Stopped my disconnects, and also keeps my pedal from moving when I play. Way easier and less time consuming than sprays, dryer sheets, or drum set massages, and evidently just as effective ;D
