What is the speed of dark? Simple. Dark is defined by the absolute abscence of light and can only be measured at the speed in which light goes away, therefore travels at the exact same speed of light, which is 299,792,458 m / s.
To prove my theory, think of it like this
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The dotted line above is a representation of a strobe light from a profile view. the dashes are the dark and the spaces are the light in between. They must move at exactly the same speed or eventually one would catch up to the other and the light would overtake the dark dashes, illuminating them and removing them from existence, and therefore rendering dark an impossibility only spoken of in fairy tales and sci-fi novels.
Next question?

ummm magic box if the earth spins at 1040 mph why cant I just float in a helicopter and let the earth spin under me and make it to the west coast in 3 hours instead of 7 Hmmm.... well i'm pretty sure you could to some degree, in theory, but there are many many variables preventing you from doing so. Ever notice how a fly buzzing around the cabin of your car doesn't smash into the back window when you mash the gas? This is because the cars interior atmosphere travels for the most part as one with the car, as does the earth's atmosphere travel with it. Keep in mind that even this is open to millions of variables including but not exclusive to weather systems, high and low pressure systems, jet streams, humidity etc etc etc. If you took off in a helicopter and went straight up and hovered you be affected entirely too much by the variables to legitimately let the earth rotate under you. Even if there were absolutely zero atmosphere, you would be traveling 1040 mph at launch and it would take a signifacant amount of time to slow down and realize any gain from the earths rotation. Here is one thing I do know from my days spent in the Army in an artillery unit. On extremely long range fire missions, the earth's rotation is a consideration when computing coordinates for fire missions. So i guess the answer is this. If you could take off in a chopper and only make flight adjusments to exactly negate the affects of all the atmospheric variables on your vehicle, then yes at that point the earth would be spinning at 1040 mph below you. except you wouldn't know it, you'd just feel like you were flying at exactly 1040 miles per hour. Also keep in mind that the speed of 1040 mph is only relevant on the equator. Please multiply by the cosine of your geographical latitude for a more accurate speed of the Earth's rotation at your current location.

if i spray spot remover on my dog spot will he dissappear? Yes, potentially. Enough spot remover sprayed directly into the mouth of your dog Spot could poison him, kill him and essentially cause him to "disappear" from your life. Of course this applies to all dogs regardless of name. And honestly your dog, Spot, may disappear by his own volition due to it's general distaste for you and your need to experiment on him with toxic household cleaning solutions.

I read an Iron Man comic once where he needed to get to the west coast but didn't want to waste all that fuel in his jet boots. So he just hung out in the upper atmosphere for awhile until California swung by below him.
So while that may not work in a helicopter, it will totally work in your millionaire super hero robot war suit.

Only one known band rocks harder than Taking Back Sunday. And only because this particular band laid the grounds for every style and genre of music that followed. Every single song of the last 4 decades is derivitive of their sound. The Beatles ;D
