Atlanta based Blackberry Smoke continues to grow into the premiere Southern Rock band of America. Over the last 12 months they have shared the stage with ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Shooter Jennings, Cross Canadian Ragweed and countless others. The band has recently finished recording their
sophomore effort “Little Piece Of Dixie” with legendary producer Dann Huff (Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts) and engineer Justin Niebank, to be released summer of 2009.
REVIEWS
Blackberry Smoke has been around a little longer and has rubbed shoulders with some really big names (ZZ Top for one), so there’s no lack of showmanship here. Charlie Starr is up there front and center, exuding personality and attitude. The vocals are tight, with some great harmonizing by guitarist Paul Jackson, and the rhythm section of brothers Brit and Richard Turner is rock solid. Brit’s drumming also has an unmistakable presence.

1 How did you guys join up?
Charlie: No big epic story, wish it was better but we all knew each other from the Atlanta music scene and joined up!
2 How did you get your start musically?
Charlie: Well my dad was a bluegrass guitar player and was always playing these awesome songs. My grandma would play piano as well. So music was very important to my family it is the back bone of my family.
3 Who are your influences?
Charlie: the Stones, Faces, Big Jim, Marshall Tucker and tons more the list could go on ...
4 You guys did a tour with ZZ Top, how was that?
Charlie we did 2 tours with ZZ. they were the most gracious guys ever. It was so much fun to hang out and share meals with them. Billy Gibbons I got to watch jam out on drums and he gave me a beautiful Lucite clear guitar! We got to go rock their crowds faces off for 40 minutes every nite!
5 Is southern rock back on the rise?
Charlie: I hope so ! We never went out to create one style of music , we just create what naturally feels and sounds good to us .Our main goal is to make music that is fun for us. Though there are a lot of good Southern rock bands out there, like Driven' N Cryin whose CD is out today and is awesome!
6 What kind of gear do you use?
Charlie : I like to use my 56 Les Paul Gibson and Orange Crate amps. That guitar is my warhorse!
7 What is your favorite venues to play ?
Charlie: Beacon Theater and the Machine Shop in Flint Michigan. The Machine Shop is quite possibly the coolest rock and roll bar i have ever set foot in!
8 If you where putting together a big festival who would be on the bill?
The Stones, Zep, Zach Brown, Marshall Tucker, Georgia Satellites, Black Crowes, Drivin N Cryin, our good friend Shooter Jennings and of course the Allman Brothers.
8 What are your feelings on Rockband and Guitar hero the games?
I totally get them and bless the people who made them.My 13 year old plays them, and it sparked such a interest in music for him. He would ask Dad who is playing the lead on Jessica and so on. Then the next thing we got him a real guitar .I think it would be a great honor to be in the game!
9 What are some of your other interests besides music?
Cars! The whole band is into cars. We just restored a 59 Chevy for the drummer. Cars are like Guitars, when you have them you love them and when you don't you are crying about them!
10 What is next for Blackberry Smoke?
Look out for our next album,
Little Piece of Dixie and our tour to support that. We are going to tell our booker throw darts on the map. Where they land we play. We are going to tour until the wheels fall of the wagon!
